Coin Values – Change is the Only Constant

The old adage “change is the only constant” applies to the coin market. And January and February 2013 has seen some significant changes. We saw the first coin to top $10,000,000 in auction… the famed 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar from the Cardinal Collection. This seems to have generated a great deal of confidence in the increasing value of the great numismatic rarities. Expectations are very high for the final sale price of the Walton example of the 1913 Liberty Nickel scheduled for auction in late April. Other high six- and seven-figure coins are “hot.”

But, the high value coins are not the only ones realizing price increases. At the Long Beach show just last week, Morgan and Peace Dollars were in high demand. After many months of stagnant collector demand, there has been a real surge of interest in both circulated and uncirculated examples. Even common date coins like the 1879-S, 1881-S and 1882-S coins in Choice and Gem Uncirculated condition were in demand and being swept up by anxious collectors.

Nice Gem quality common date Morgan Dollars like this 1880-S PCGS MS65 are in high demand.

As mentioned, change is the only constant. As demand for silver dollars increases, demand for generic gold coins appears to have softened slightly. What a difference a month makes. At the FUN show, gold issues were hot and hard to acquire. Just a month later, with Platinum now at a higher spot price than gold, investors seem to be cautiously sitting on the sidelines waiting for the next surge in gold prices. But as we have seen in the past few years, all it takes is one international incident or difficult economic news and gold quickly becomes the safe haven. Expect prices to be volatile in the short-term.

So, what is the meaning of these changes for the average collector/investor? A balanced portfolio of high quality collector coins and silver and gold bullion coins will smooth out the ups and downs of the changing trends. Buy coins and bullion for the long term and avoid reacting to short-term price changes. Have fun building your collection, buy quality coins, and hold for long-term profits.
